Talk:Skorie
Heimdal, the best you can do is to make a new page with the right name and move the picture...hopefully some has a picture of the right bird to add on this page , ;-)

I think that's some kind of a Skorie in first years colors. It's not a Bonxie. Too much white overall but no white triangles before the end of the wings. (I like all birds especially those which fit to a pot, but I'm not an expert!) ;-) Islandhopper 23:30, 25 November 2006 (GMT)
To me it looks like a 'skorie' too..as far as I know 'Skorie' is a young gull, we call it'Skårunge',that's nearly the same name
Oddrun 23:37, 25 November 2006 (GMT)
I don't know much about birds, but I was about 4 feet away from this one when I took the photo, It was among a group of Black Back Gulls, I assumed it was a juvenille black back. I may be wrong. :-)
But I am about 90% sure it isn't a bonxie, the head is too big, the beak isn't quite right, and I'm fairly sure that bonxies of any age, and black backs, are serious enemies of each other.

I still say the bird in the pic is a bonxie, have a look here http://www.nature-shetland.co.uk/naturelatest/latestbirds.htm. Check the sightings for Tue 15th May and the pic of a Great Skua by Dougie Preston. I rest my case ;-)Heimdal 14:42, 25 May 2007 (MDT)
Well, Heimdal, it is always difficult to rely on a pic ... that's why I do prefer guides with drawings leaving out all the individual points but concentrating on important details. Despite that - Robbie has one unbeatable argument for his case: Have you ever seen a juvenile Skua swimming within a flock of Swaabies ... or Herrin Maas ??? I have seen stunning air fights between them ... ;-) ... leaving absolutely no chance for any of the combatants to take a bath for a short rest :-D Islandhopper 16:18, 25 May 2007 (MDT)
Heimdal,
Having reviewed the pics closely, there is enough element of doubt in my mind to agree that the picture is an unsafe example, and we should look for a more definite pic.. As I said before, I just assumed because it was in the middle of blackbacks that it was a young one of them.
But I suppose that as, Willie Nelson has released a Reggae album,,,, anything is possible ;-) ;-)
Opposites can mix.. ;-)
Have you got any more reliable pics????
If not we can add it to our Picture Wanted list and hope for a result.
Cheers, Robbie 16:24, 25 May 2007 (MDT)
Robbie,
I think adding it to the "picture wanted list" might be the best. What do you think about adding a double asterix saying "experts only" or something similar ... I'm afraid all of us who are now active on Shetlopedia might have their difficulties how to judge. An "experts only request" might attract the interest of a pro or semi-pro birdwatcher instead ??? ... any idea Islandhopper 16:57, 25 May 2007 (MDT)
Bonxies and swaabies and maas will sit together on the water round a boat while you are fishing, the fighting starts when you throw them some fish guts. Not something I have ever thought of photographing, but as my boat is now back in the water I will keep it in mind if the weather will only improve and warm up enough to consider a trip to the Bard. At the Lk marina this afternoon it was bright sunshine, wind SW force 6 (12 m/s) and 8°C ;-)Heimdal 17:05, 25 May 2007 (MDT)
I know bird watcher I could ask ! If you would like! please note I like watching birds now and then :-)).... JEANNIE
Jeannie,
Dat widna be Hugh Harrup??? If I wis i da isle I'd a geng alang him, maybe crossed his palm wi a twartree pints.. ;-)
And yes, any more expert input would be welcome.:-)
And Jeannie, , a few tips..
1)when adding to a talk page like this; The + sign at the top of the page starts a new topic/headline withing the page, so if you're replying to a topic like this it's easiest to just click the edit tab and then add your text below the last contribution.. leaving a double space between.
2)When adding text to this, or any wiki page, typing <br> is like the return key, and starts a new line. Compare what I've typed here in 'edit' with what appears on the page.
3)To put your user name and date/time stamp to your addition to a talk page, just add ~~~~ at the end of your text, (it's that silly key that's hard to find, especially on a laptop),,
Hope that helps you :-) :-)
Heimdal,
Wi wadder laek dat, laeve du da boat atida noost fur enoo. ... I wis we wid get a grain o wind, dis calm is starting ta annoy me ;-)))... Still hits aye a guid cast fur da craig stane.. :-)
Islandhopper,
I think that asking for "expert" input on a general request page, will likely just get more of the same "experts" ;-) as we already have.. :-)
In this instance perhaps the direct attack may work best.
Asking a nature photographer if he/she would like to contribute pictures, and in return putting a link below each of their pictures, to their website, or their business page.. What do you think??
Apologies for any typo errors,, only one operational eye at the moment, so keyboard/finger co-ordination is a bit iffy. :-)
Robbie 00:06, 26 May 2007 (MDT)
Robbie,
if someone knows an expert for this or that a "direct attack" is of course the best choice. I do it on several websites asking for particular pics and it looks like that first photographs are due to come soon. As for the pro photographers: Some would surely like to add some of their extra stuff to Shetlopedia and I (personally) could well live with such a link below a pic. BUT we have to consider that there are two minor probs:
i) Shetlopedia runs under GNU-licence what might limit contributions from pros and some kinds of "ambitioned photographers". That's a general prob of wikipedia, too, to acquire good shots.
ii) a link added below a pic going out to the photographer's website would be a thing quite unusual in wikipeadia terms. Nevertheless we might agree on it but I'm afraid it might irritate future users who are familiar with general wiki rules but not with Shetlopedia's special settings ... and then a lot of really useless edits might start. Therefor I think an additional link in the links section explained/commented as "more pictures about ... on the XXXwebsite" would be more accepted. Islandhopper 02:48, 26 May 2007 (MDT)
Yup, that makes sense,, I didn't know about the licence/wiki problems.. Anyhow, which photographer/s should we ask?? Hugh Harrop does some great stuff, see here.. http://www.hughharrop.com/
Perhaps I should mail him and ask if he'd be interested..
Robbie 03:10, 26 May 2007 (MDT)
Excellent stuff ... go ahead, please. Even "second class" or "sorted out as not for commercial use" pics of "lesser quality" according to his standards will be a valuable contribution to Shetlopedia ... in case he might have any probs with the GNU-licence ... ;-) Islandhopper 03:59, 26 May 2007 (MDT)
- I've sent Hugh an email, asking if he might help us, and directing him to the pages in Business for himself and Shetland Wildlife, his tour guiding company. So even if we don't get pics, we might get some additions to that pages ;-)

I asked someone's opinion on this. I received this email from them.
if the photographer who took the pic got to about 4feet from it, then it probably won't be a bonxi .the plumage look's right for a bonxi, but the beak doesn't..the bonxi's beak is very stout and has a hook, the one in the pic.i don't think has the profile of the bonxie's beak.
